Fipronil and metabolites Sulfide, Sulfone and Desulfonyl
Fipronil has been used in many insecticide formulations since being introduced in 1987. Three of its metabolites are: Sulfide, which is a product of reduction in soil. Sulfone, from oxidation in soil, and Desulfonyl, which is a photocatalyzed degradate. Fipronil is toxic to birds, fish and some invertebrates. It is a WHO Class II moderately hazardous pesticide, and is a Group C (Possible Human) carcinogen. Some metabolites are considered more toxic than the base compound.
