Perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids (PFSAs)
Perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids (PFSAs) are synthetic fluorinated organic acids within the broader family of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). They have been widely used in firefighting foams and in products that provide stain, water, and grease resistance. Common PFSAs include perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), and perfluorobutane sulfonic acid (PFBS). Due to their high persistence and bioaccumulative potential, these compounds are closely monitored by agencies such as the USEPA, the Stockholm Convention, and the European Union to limit human and environmental exposure.
