PFAS in Food Contact Materials (FCMs)

June 5th, 2025
Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemicals used in Food Contact Materials (FCMs) such as paper and cardboard grease-resistant fast-food packaging, and microwave popcorn bags. PFAS compounds are resistant to heat, oil, and water, but they also persist in the environment and human body, which raises significant public health concerns. Regulatory bodies such as the EPA, FDA, and AOAC International are actively evaluating PFAS in Food Packaging Matrices.
PFAS compounds are widely applied in food packaging materials due to their unique grease repellent and thermal resistant properties. Food is at high risk of PFAS contamination if it comes in contact with packaging or containers that have been treated with these compounds. This can contribute to human exposure to these persistent chemicals.
Alternatives to banned Long-Chain PFAS, such as Ultrashort- and Short-Chain PFAS, Perfluoroalkyl Phosphates (PAPs), Fluorotelomer Alcohols (FTOHs), have been commonly used as substitutes in many industries and applications, including in food packaging materials. Many of those PFAS compounds may exhibit similar environmental persistence and bioaccumulation properties which present a major human health and environmental concern.
PFAS in Food Contact Materials (FCMs) Reference Standards
Accurate monitoring and identification of PFAS in food packaging is essential to reduce exposure and to manufacture products that are safe for consumers.
To help support the analysis of these ubiquitous chemicals, AccuStandard offers a large selection of high-quality Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) for different classes of PFAS including over 45 single component CRMs for PFAS compounds commonly found in Food Contact Materials (FCMs).
