Ultrashort-Chain and Short-Chain PFAS are commonly identified as PFAS compounds with less than 8 carbons in their molecular structure. While the use of many of the long chain PFAS (8 ≥ Carbons) such as Perfluorooctane-1-sulfonic acid (PFOS) and Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) have been gradually phased out and eliminated globally, Ultrashort-Chain PFAS (2-3 carbons) and Short-Chain PFAS (4-7 carbons) have emerged as alternative compounds for many industries. This has contributed to widespread use of these replacement compounds in different consumer and commercial products such as textiles, food packaging, firefighting foam, and others. Consequently, detection of Ultrashort- and Short-Chain PFAS has become more prevalent in recent years and they are posing major exposure and contamination risks. Recent studies have found high concentrations of Ultrashort- and Short-Chain PFAS in US homes as well as in human blood and urine samples bringing the possible adverse effects of these contaminants into the spotlight.

In addition to exhibiting high mobility properties, Ultrashort and Short-Chain PFAS behave very similarly to Long-Chain PFAS when it comes to bioaccumulation and environmental persistence. These properties have made them compounds of interest for many regulations and have prompted the development of different test methods targeting the analysis of these ubiquitous compounds to better identify and quantify them in real world samples. While the potential toxicity of many of these compounds are still under evaluation, there is a growing concern about the short-term and the long-term exposure to Ultra-Short and Short-Chain PFAS.
