How and Why to Sonicate a Reference Standard
0:07
Sonication helps ensure that all analytes are in the solution before using your standard
0:13
It is recommended to sonicate if suspended material is observed in the ampule
0:18
or if the storage condition on the label states "Sonicate"
0:22
However, sonication may be detrimental to some standards
0:26
such as Volatile Organic Compounds, or VOCs
0:31
Be sure that your sonicator is clean and ready for use
0:38
Fill the ultrasonic bath with deionized water to the appropriate level
0:44
Let the sealed ampule warm to room temperature, then place it into the ultrasonic bath
0:51
Set your sonicator to run for at least 15 minutes
1:02
after 15 minutes have passed
1:05
Inspect the ampule to ensure that all analytes are completely dissolved
1:14
Some products may require additional time
1:18
Allow the sample to return to room temperature before using
1:24
Invert the ampule several times to achieve homogeneity
1:28
Sonication generates heat, which can increase pressure within the ampule
1:34
For safety, we recommend opening the ampule under a hood
